It seems impossible, yet moving a church is possible. It happened right here, in Cancano. But let’s take a step back to the period when the church was built. It was the 1930s, and the construction site of the first dam was in full swing.
To accommodate the workers of the then Electric Company of Milan, a small village was built, along with the little church of St. Erasmo. Subsequently, in the 1960s, work began on the construction of a new dam, but with the consequent rise in the reservoir level, the church of St. Erasmo risked being submerged. Thus, a group of workers was assigned the unusual task of “dismantling” the church, numbering the bricks one by one, to be able to rebuild it where it would be safe, in the current position from where it dominates the entire valley today.
