Names not only guide us but also remind us of where we come from. Indeed, it is in Teglio that the Valtellina takes its name, which according to scholars derives from the Latin “Vallis Tellina,” precisely the Valley of Teglio. Now, approach the church of San Pietro, in the center of the village, to discover a treasure found in the late eighties.
For four centuries, the figure of the Christ Pantocrator remained hidden here, under layers of plaster and lime. This fresco dominated the apse basin from the late fourteenth century until, in 1537, it was covered by the Protestants for religious reasons. Imagine now what the restorers must have felt as, one gesture after another, they uncovered the face of the ruddy Christ. From a celestial background, there appears seated on a rainbow the Christ of Judgment Day, with flushed cheeks, almond-shaped eyes, and a slightly parted mouth that seemed to whisper: “I’ve been waiting for you for centuries.”
Observe the colours, the symbols of the evangelists and the figures of the apostles, frescoes that time has damaged, but which can still be deciphered and appreciated.
Smell the scent of the past, embedded in the stone; time is preserved in these hidden places.
Sitting in the churchyard of San Pietro, listen to the melody of the bells of the nearby parish church of Santa Eufemia.
