Ponte in Valtellina
Culture and universe in one embrace

Go to route directions

From the very first steps, along the ancient cobblestones that pave the narrow streets of this village, one perceives that its inhabitants and those who govern it have lived for generations with the awareness of being in one of the most beautiful residential areas in the Valtellina, where it is even possible to visit an astronomical observatory by reservation, built here in homage to the late eighteenth-century Pontascan astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi.

The village stands out for its particular cultural liveliness, a legacy of the Jesuits who arrived here during the rule of the Protestant Grisons. This cultural sensitivity today leads the inhabitants to take care with pride of the artistic and architectural beauties coming from a rich and historic wine economy, the same one that has made the nearby village of Chiuro famous, recognized as a city of wine. Chiuro can be reached along narrow cobbled country roads, which were once used to free the villages from abundant storm waters, allowing them to flow into the valley floor.

Awaken your senses

Listen to the ringing of the bells of the parish church of San Maurizio which every hour marks the passage of time with a familiar toll.

Observe the stars, from the astronomical observatory or outdoors under the night sky, and have your breath taken away by the beauty of the universe and the sparkle of the stars that shine on the Alpine peaks, on the mountain pastures and on the flowering meadows.

In the summer, you can feel the air saturated with the scent of hay and blooms. Entering one of the historic cellars, where the Valtellina Nebbiolo rests solemnly, smell the scent of the wood of the barrels and the scent of the wine maturing in the laborious silence of time.

Let yourself be conquered by the unique and unrepeatable flavour of Bresaola della Valtellina PGI, which preserves the breath of the mountains and the wisdom of generations of taste artisans.

Bresaola Bites
#10
With white wines (or rosé)

While it’s generally true that wine should match the colour of the food, it’s not the case for Bresaola of Valtellina PGI. The right pairing, in fact, is with white wines, flavorful and with a good level of acidity, or with sparkling wines and rosé.
